15. The Teacher Who Stopped a School Shooting

At 3 o’clock on February 23, 2010, a mysterious man walked into Deer Creek Middle School with a rifle. He started firing shots into the crowd of students. Two students, a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old, were shot. Their 57-year-old math teacher, David Benke, heard gunshots and rushed to the rescue. He ran up to the shooter and tackled him to the ground. The assistant principal and another teacher helped him subdue the shooter and wrestle the rifle away from him. David remained humble about his actions and didn’t expect any praise. The students had a different idea, and they opened up a Facebook page entitled “Dr. David Benke Is A Hero!!!!”. It now has tens of thousands of likes.
