Sandboard a Volcano–Cerro Negro, Nicaragua

When there is no snow, sports like snowboarding are tough, especially for those with no imagination. Fortunately, someone figured out that one can snowboard on sand much the same way. The key is finding someplace big enough. Cue: Cerro Negro in Nicaragua. It’s an active volcano, so there’s that risk, but mostly from inhaling noxious fumes, not dying of molten lava. The views are worth it. Also, there are no chair lifts. You gotta hump this hill, but once you get to the top, it’s like snowboarding down. Of course, Nicaragua’s tourism industry provides tour outfits to guide you. Also, if you fall, it’s sand, so injuries are low. Plus, you won’t get wet snow pants from falling, partly because there’s no snow, but you won’t wear snow pants so double-whammy.
