4. The Town That Learned to Talk
For many people living with a disability, it can feel like you’re isolated from everyone around you. That was the case for Muaharrem, a deaf man living in Istanbul. He uses sign language to communicate, but it was hard to find ways to talk to the various strangers living around him. He was getting by, but felt isolated and alone – never able to truly inhabit the city which he called home.
That was when Samsung decided to step in. Samsung contacted the people living in Muaharrem’s area and asked them to learn sign language as a promotion for their new technology for the hard of hearing. The locals happily agreed.
For the first time in his life, one morning, as Muaharrem’s sister, Ozlem, walked him through his neighborhood, he could understand everything being said. Everyone around him seemed to speak his language. He could finally be understood. It was one of the best gifts he ever could have gotten: the gift of friendship, community, and communication. Good work, Samsung.
