Halong Bay, Vietnam
Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Bay of Halong appears untouched by the ravages of the conflict which once tore the country of Vietnam apart. Limestone islands coated in tropical spender dot the bay, stretching up from the sea like they would touch the sky if they could. The limestone karst, after millions of years in the bay, has created a unique biological environment home to an equally unique biodiversity. Some 60 species of animal come only from this bay, and 14 species of plants. Getting there from the United States, you’ll only need your U.S. passport and an internet connection to book your accommodations. You’ll take a bus, train or rental car from where you land. The best time of year to visit, when the weather is most cooperative is between March and June, but expect more travelers, fewer rooms available if planning last minute. Make as many accommodations as you can before leaving home. You can always make changes on the fly. Whatever you do, get out on that water on the best boat you can afford.
