26. The Real Tiger Died
The family dog, Tiger, was a trained TV dog. In one episode, “Katchoo,” Tiger took a prominent role as Jan developed an allergy to the pooch. When the shooting for that episode ended one day, the dog trainer took Tiger to the lot to let him run for a bit. Someone driving through the lot didn’t see him and struck the dog dead. The trainer managed to find a dog who looked close enough to Tiger at a local shelter, but it wasn’t a trained dog. He didn’t follow commands. The set activity scared him. It was all they could do to finish the episode. Finally, to finish the tearful goodbye scene, they had to nail the dog’s collar to the floor. (I KNOW, RIGHT?)
