25 Inspiring Tales of Real-Life Bravery

21. The Retired Nurse Who Stopped a Mob

Deborah Hughes is only 4’11”, and weighs just 126 pounds. That didn’t stop her from being fearless, though. She put herself in the middle of a Detroit mob to save Steve Utash, the man who was beaten into a coma after stopping to help a 10-year-old boy he had accidentally hit with his truck. Deborah threw herself on top of Utash, putting her face and chest on him, pleading with the crowd to stop. Finally, the crowd backed off, allowing Hughes to perform CPR. No one hurt her, and an ambulance finally arrived. Thanks to her, both Utash and the boy survived.
